According to Union Budget 2009, any expenditure to build and operate such facilities (other than land ) can be fully treated as deductions for tax. India is the second largest producer of fresh fruits and vegetables in the world, and the proposal is aimed at reducing wastage of perishables. Indian Cold Storage industry is estimated at USD 2.6 billion and this contains 88 % of surface storage and the rest in mobile storages. Currently, this has few players like Blue Star, Snowman, Crystal, Refcon, Carrier, Bulkani Deep Freeze, RK Foodland, Trans Cold Chain, Sensitech, Fresh & Healthy(Concor), Apollo Everest Kool Solutions, GATI (Kausar) and Tata Voltas.
KAPPEC sets up IQF facility in Hubli

Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corp (KAPPEC) is setting up a cold storage facility in Hubli with IQF (Individual Quick Freezing) technology in joint-venture with Ken Agritech Pvt Ltd. The technology for IQF is sourced from Holland and Belgium. This is first of a kind of public-private partnership in Karnataka in agri projects. The 600 metric tonne, cold storage facility will handle around 5000 kgs of mango and will employ around 200 people.
StanChart keen on funding cold storages or refrigerated transport

StanChart Bank is planning to carve a niche in agri lending and has done a survey with apple trade. It has been learnt that close to 50% of money goes to middlemen. while farmer get only a meagre 3%. Sensing this opportunity, StanChart is keen to fund projects that are setting up cold storages or refrigerated transport in and around Delhi or HP. The bank is also planning to set up a separate company to achieve this objective.
Cold Storage owners in hot water after fall in potato prices

With potato prices crashing, farmers who used cold storage facilities in Agra are refusing to pick it back. As claiming it, will mean paying a rent of Rs.100 per day for 50 kg and with low potato prices, it will mean loss. This has put cold storage owners to bear the loss and now they have to clean this out to accommodate fresh arrivals of new potatoes. Cold Storage owners have incurred a loss of Rs. 500,000/- this season on account of low prices.
